Novice A's Win Gold in Barrie
The Novice "A" team captured gold at the Canadian Tire Classic in Barrie the weekend of November 24-26, 2017.

This is the teams first tournament win, and they did it with style going 3-0-1 in round robin play, defeating tough teams from Burlington, Barrie, and Quite West , while holding the Owen Sound Jr. Attack to a 4-4 draw.  This landed them in the second place spot after round robin play.

The semi final game paired the Avs with the tough task of facing Owen Sound again.  This time the boys left no doubt in a 7-3 romping of the Jr Attack team.

On to the finals, where the boys faced the one team they had not played yet.  The undefeated Osgoode Rideau Romans, who went 4-0 in the tournament and  eliminated Burlington in the semis to set up the final.  Two undefeated, quick, skilled teams.  One had to loose.  One would be Champions.

The Avs jumped out to an early lead with a beautiful goal from Francesco Montecchia.  The Avs stood strong until a controversial goal was scored late in the second.  The teams were locked after 2 periods.

Then in the third period, the speedy Finley Holt picked up a loose puck just inside the Romans blue line, made two beautiful dangles around the defense, and slid a backhand shot five hole for the game winner.

The team was back-boned by solid goaltending from Francesco DePaola, and Mason Medeiros which only allowed an impressive 12 goals against in the 6 games played (2 GAA).  These two guys stepped up and performed for the team when called upon.  Great job you two.  The solid defense from Michael Carson, Tristian Walker, Ryan Drong, Ryan Lehman, Owen Duckett, and Lucas van den Huevel limited shots against and cleared rebounds to help out the solid tending from the goalies.

With a staggering 24 goals for in the 6 games, all the forwards were chipping in on the score sheet, and back checking to help the defense.  Forwards include Porter Mastroianni, Evan Collins, Brayden Crevier, Lucas Empringham, Cole Murphy, Reece Traver, Kyler van den Huevel, Franceso Montecchia, and Finley Holt.

Special thanks to the coaches Steve Traver, Fred Mastroianni, Jason Drong and team trainer Mike van den Huevel for getting the team ready and keeping them motivated.  Great work guys.

Congratulations to all players, coaches and parents on great tournament.
