ImPACT Testing - to be completed as soon as possible
Last year, the AMHL entered into an agreement with ImPACT Concussion Management to assist us in managing players who incur concussions during the season. The Board believes this is an important initiative given the significance head injuries at all levels of hockey.

Recent statistics indicate that in excess of 10% of minor hockey players will incur a concussion in the course of any given season. We need to be proactive in tracking and caring for those players who are injured to ensure that they do not sustain further injury through incomplete care or coming back too soon. Due to the positive response received, we will again be working with ImPACT during the 2012-13 season.

The ImPACT program involves players taking an on-line test that evaluates their cognitive and motor skills. This will establish a baseline against which they can subsequently be tested should they incur a concussion. The program is run out of the McMaster Sports Medicine Clinic and is staffed by full-time doctors who specialize in head injuries. Should a player incur a suspected concussion, their team manager will complete an incident report and the player would then go to the McMaster clinic for evaluation. Using the baseline test as one of the evaluation tools, the doctors at the clinic will treat the player and monitor their improvement over time. Note that the player would be held off the ice until the doctor concludes he/she is sufficiently recovered to resume play. Participation is MANDATORY for all Rep players (excluding Select) playing at the Peewee level and above (note that the baselining process is not effective below the Peewee age group). Each participating player must go to the ImPACT website to take the test (it takes 20-30 minutes). Note that there is no requirement to pay on-line…the fees for this program have been incorporated into each team’s Rep fees. The only out of pocket cost for players is a $10 assessment fee at the McMaster clinic should an injury occur…the rest is covered by OHIP. There will be no reimbursement of these fees by the AMHL.
