As
all teams are now playing a full schedule of games we are starting to see some
concussion issues arise. The AMHL has had some questions and I thought we should
just clarify our position on these injuries. For the teams registered in the
ImPACT program, we strongly recommend that the ImPact Clinic determine whether a
player is fit to return to the ice for any activity. If your trainer suspects
that a player has a concussion then the player's parents should be encouraged to
take the player to the David Braley Sports Medicine Clinic at McMaster
University. Walk ins are allowed. Identify the player as an AMHL registered
ImPACT participant and they will do the rest.
At this facility the player has access to doctor's that specialize in sports injuries and they follow a post concussion process that maybe more in depth than that of a GP. As you are aware, each of our players completed ImPACT testing at the beginning of the season to establish cognitive and physical baselines The doctors at the Braley Clinic use this information to assess the severity of the concussion and determine when the player is ready to return to the ice.
Again, we strongly recommend the use of the Braley Clinic in all cases where a concussion is suspected. Head injuries are serious things and the AMHL is hugely supportive of taking advantage of the ImPACT program in conjunction with the doctors who specialize in the treatment of concussions at the Braley Clinic.
