Major Peewee AE Give Back to the Community
The Ancaster Avalanche Major Peewee AE Team will be performing community service on Saturday October 19th.  They will be volunteering their time for a worthy cause, Hamilton Victory Gardens.

A little bit about the organization: Hamilton Victory Gardens is working to transform our city by growing fresh produce for local food programs.  A dedicated team of community volunteers works together to build, plant, maintain and harvest urban gardens within the City of Hamilton.

All the fresh, nutritious produce, which is grown responsibly without the use of pesticides, is then donated to local food banks and hot-meal programs.

Hamilton Victory Gardens is a faith-based, non-profit organization that began in 2011 with a single garden, and progressed to six garden sites in 2012, including locations at Macassa Lodge, the Cancord facility, and Good Shepherd Square.  In 2013, a garden with 20 raised beds was constructed at Philpott Memorial Church.

In 2012, the total poundage of fresh produce harvested and donated was 13,600 pounds. As of September 17, the total harvested in 2013 is 19,900, and there are over 6 to 8 weeks left in the year’s growing season!! There is always a need for volunteers to help in the gardens with maintenance, planting, and harvesting.  No experience is necessary, and there are supervisors on hand to assist.

We have work bees every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at our 2 largest locations: The Cancord site at 325 Mary St. (near Barton St, just behind the Food Basics store), and the Macassa Lodge site at 701 Upper Sherman Avenue (between Fennell and Mohawk).
We can also arrange evening work bees, if Saturdays are not possible, but the evenings are getting shorter and cooler, so these would have to end about 7:00 or 7:30.

You will find more information at our website, which is www.hamiltonvictorygardens.org
Please contact me by email or phone (905-575-9439) if you have any questions or are interested in coming out to a work bee.

Thanks for your interest in giving back to the community.
