The Ancaster Avalanche U11 Select Team just completed their first tournament of the 2021/22 season. For many of the players, this was their first tournament experience... and they faced some great teams from the GTA.
We started of with a 4-0 win vs. the Leaside Flames, where our breakout speed led to three 1st period breakaway goals. Leaside battled, but our goaltending was solid, and held the shutout through the entire game. A late goal clinched the first win of the tournament.
Game two was tough, vs Lorne Park. We got off to an early 1st period lead, and held on until late in the 3rd when LPC was able to sneak one by us to tie it up (video goal review is still pending!!!). Another late goal from LPC clinched the 2-1 win for them, and our team celebrated their first loss of the season.
Game three was our first time facing a 'must win' situation. The kids responded well, and came out ready to battle. We were up against a tough George Bell Titan team, but were definitely up to the challenge. We skated to a 4-2 victory, and clinched first place going into the final game against Leaside.
From the opening puck drop, it was very clear that Leaside was looking to avenge the 4-0 loss from game 1. They played a strong game, and held us to a very limited amount of shots on net, winning a well-deserved gold medal. The Avalanche players and coaches were proud to bring home the silver, and the players on both sides should be congratulated on doing so well in their first tournament of the year.
Now we prepare for the next few games, and then we're off to our 2nd tournament over the Christmas Holidays... hopefully by then we'll have our Avalanche jerseys!!!
