Av's Bring Home Silver from Caledonia!
The Ancaster Avalanche ended a successful weekend at the Challenge Cup in Caledonia with a silver medal.

On Sunday Ancaster got a much-anticipated rematch against the Grimsby Peach Kings.

The game came about with hard fought victories over Lincoln and Mt. Brydges twice.   The Avalanche offence had showed signs of life with 13 goals during the 3 game winning streak.

On Sunday the Avalanche came ready to play and started strong.   In fact despite giving up the first goal Ancaster out shot Grimsby 5-4 in period 1. The only goal came on a Grimsby power play.

Grimsby took a 2-0 lead but Mark quickly made it 2-1 mid way through period 3.  Grimsby again took a 2-goal lead, again on the power play before period 2 ended.

Ancaster had a full 2-minute 5 on 3 and despite many chances couldn’t beat the Grimsby goaltender. Once again Ancaster out shot Grimsby, 7-5 in the second.

The Peach kings added 2 late goals, including one with the empty net and had a 5-1 final.  Despite the 2 goals, Ancaster once again won the shot count in period 3.

Despite the score, Grimsby scored twice on the power play and added an empty net goal.  The 5-1 score was not a true indication of the competitiveness of the game.

The downfall of the Avalanche on Sunday was an inability to score, Grimsby’s goaltender would win tournament MVP and was a difficult foe for Ancaster.  Ancaster’s inability to succeed on special teams was also a factor.

The silver medal will prove to be a huge building block for the Avalanche as the season progresses.  Congratulations on the silver boys!

Things get back to real on Monday night as Ancaster hosts Burlington in Tri-County action.

Hard Hat – Jacob Sf.
